Les montagnes des Vosges s'étendent le long de la rive Ouest du Rhin sur environ 250 Km. La chaîne se compose de trois parties, du Sud au Nord :

•    Les Grandes Vosges, d'une altitude moyenne de 1100m, incluant des sommets arrondis appelés “ballons”.

•     Les Vosges Centrales, d'une altitude moyenne de 900m, dont les sommets sont plus étroits et plus pointus.

•     Les Basses Vosges, un plateau d'une altitude moyenne de 500m.

Les versants les moins élevés sont maintenant déboisés, mais plus haut, une vaste forêt couvre la chaîne, sauf sur les sommets les plus hauts qui sont couverts par la prairie. La partie Ouest de la chaîne est battue par la pluie et la neige, et la température moyenne est plus basse dans cette partie. On trouve une culture viticole sur le versant Est jusqu’à 400m (les vins d'Alsace). Il n’y a pas de neiges éternelles sur ce massif.

Le sommet le plus haut se trouve au Grand Ballon de Guebwiller (à 1424m) dans la partie Sud.
